The body of a 25-year-old man has been recovered from a car that went into Lake Ontario in Mississauga early this morning (March 24).

Peel Regional Police say the body was pulled from the car, described as a black Hyundai, early this afternoon. The car, which had gone into the water from a boat launch, was also removed from the lake.

Another person who was in the vehicle when it went into the water near Lakefront Promenade shortly after 3 a.m. was able to escape to safety.

That person, a man whose age was not released, is still being interviewed by investigators. He was taken to hospital as a precaution, but did not suffer injuries, according to police.

Police haven’t said who they believe was driving the car, or where the occupants of the vehicle are from.

Peel police divers initially had difficulty searching the car, which was submerged in eight to 10 feet of water, as visibility was poor.

Police are saying nothing about what circumstances may have led to the car going into the water in the early morning hours. They did say that they believe there were only two people in the vehicle.

“This investigation is continuing, so it is too early to determine if charges will be laid, if applicable,” Cst. Akhil Mooken said in an email to insauga.com.

A post-mortem will be conducted to determine exact cause of death, police say.

Investigators want to speak with anyone who may have information about the incident. Police can be reached at 905-453-3311.
