Niagara Police are reeling after hearing the body they found Wednesday (May 25) on the Merritt Island Trail in Welland is one of their own.

Niagara Poice Chief Bryan MacCulloch issued a statement yesterday (May 26) identifying that the man was Niagara Police Staff Sergeant Romolo “Rom” Di Egidio.

In his message (see below) , MacCulloch said the force is asking for privacy at this time, adding the force’s “support and strength goes out to ‘Rom’s’ family, friends and colleagues.”

As they expressed on Wednesday, Di Egidio’s death was sudden and foul play is not suspected.
