Hamilton residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel on Monday (Jan. 17) as a winter storm that delivered more than 20 cm of snow overnight is expected to bring more of the white stuff.

Environment Canada updated its winter storm warning to a blizzard warning for the area urging motorists to “consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”

Northwesterly winds gusting upwards of 60 km/h may also reduce visibility ‘to near zero’ at times.

Closures

The weather has prompted a number of closures in the Hamilton area including schools and buses in both the public and Catholic school boards. Online classes have also been cancelled.

McMaster University and Mohawk College also cancelled classes on Monday due to the weather.

The HSR is also reporting a number of delays on a number of bus routes. Up-to-date information on schedule impacts can be found on the City of Hamilton website.

GO Transit is also reporting a number of cancellations and delays. More details can be found here.

Upwards of 15 cm more snow is expected to fall throughout Monday.
