Oakville Town Hall will be lit in Yellow, Green and Red through June to commemorate Black Music Month.

The Town will officially kick off the month-long celebration of Black Music and its influence on Oakville at a special flag raising event taking place Thursday, June 1 at Oakville Town Hall, located at 1225 Trafalgar Rd.

Organizers will be bringing their own flag to be flown on the Community flagpole to the event, which is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.

Oakville Mayor Rob Burton will be on hand to proclaim June 2023 as Black Music Month and “commend its thoughtful observance to all citizens of our municipality.”

“Whereas, Black performance artists and musicians play an important and key role in shaping the local music arts and cultural scene and we encourage all of our local Black musical performing artists, musicians and event curators of all ages and stages of their musical journey to continue to innovate, participate and create while living in our town,” Burton’s proclamation says.

“Whereas, the rich and varied music and culture, derived from various countries and cultures throughout Africa, as well as the music genres of the Black African diaspora includes Caribbean, Latin, Brazilian and Black African American music.”

The Oakville mayor’s proclamation will also talk about how Canada is a diverse, multicultural country and it is undeniable that Black music has an important influence in Canadian Music and music being created, produced and inspired by black people of African descent is the music that many of us enjoy on a daily basis.

“Whereas, by continuing to promote awareness and giving access to and inclusion of Black artists in Oakville events, by striving to provide accessible and affordable spaces, venues and paid performance opportunities to Black musical artists in local venues, it is providing opportunities for the continued growth of the Canadian Black music industry,” it reads.

“By celebrating Black Music Month, the town is acknowledging and recognizing the achievements of all local Black musicians, singers, DJ’s/Music Selectors, music creators, event curators and promoters throughout the International Decade for People of African Descent and beyond.”

Local residents will be able to hear some of the great music with the Black Music on the Block live event to be held Saturday, June 3 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the downtown Town Square, located on 94 George St.
