Canadian rockers Big Sugar have been announced as one of the main stage acts for one of Mississauga’s biggest festivals.
Although it is two months away, plans are already well underway for the Southside Shuffle, and Big Sugar has been added to the bill for Saturday, Sept. 6.
With over 30 years of performing success under their belts, the members of Big Sugar are known for their energetic concert performances that have taken them around the globe to critical acclaim.
They are also the favourites of other musicians such as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and Jack White of the White Stripes, who called the Big Sugar Record Five Hundred Pounds, “The best blues-based record to ever come out of Canada.”
The three-piece outfit that now features Gordie Johnson, Anders Drerup and Root Valach, Big Sugar has received five Juno Award nominations as Best New Group in 1995, Rock Album of the Year (Hemi-Vision) in 1997, Group of the Year in 1998, Best Video (The Scene) in 2000 and, in 2002, Best Rock Album (Brothers and Sisters, Are You Ready?).
As for what to expect for this year’s 27th Annual Southside Shuffle that runs Sept. 5, 6 and 7 in Port Credit, organizers say it will showcase the depth of Canadian blues and roots music to an audience that always keeps coming back for more.
Now that Big Sugar has been announced for the Saturday show, the Shuffle said headliners for Friday and Sunday will be revealed later this month.
And, several other acts have also indicated they will be taking part this year including multi-award-winning artist Tom Wilson, Grammy nominee Steve Strongman, and JUNO nominees David Gogo, Miss Emily – Unplugged, Johnny Max’s In Spite of Ourselves – An Evening of John Prine, Ira Walker, David Rotundo, and Pappy Johns Band featuring Josh Miller.
