Big Changes Are Coming Soon to Snapchat
For years now, Snapchat has been one of the biggest players in the mobile chatting and photo/video messaging scene.
However, some rumoured upcoming changes indicate that Snap Inc. may be attempting to push the app into an entirely new market.
According to a recent report from financial news network Cheddar, the company is planning to reveal a new gaming platform next month.
“The mobile game platform, internally codenamed ‘Project Cognac,’ will feature a handful of games from outside developers designed to work specifically in the Snapchat app, according to a person familiar with the matter,” the article reads.
According to this anonymous source, the new gaming initiative will be unveiled at Snap’s first-ever summit for content and developer partners in Los Angeles on April 4, 2019.
Video initiatives like more original shows will reportedly also be announced at the event.
Potentially lending credence to this speculation would be Snap’s recent acquisition of Prettygreat, an Australian gaming studio whose creative director — Luke Muscat — is behind the insanely popular phone games Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride.
This isn’t Snapchat’s first foray into the world of gaming, however. In April 2018 the company launched Snappables, a collection of small games that can be played right in the app. The games use augmented reality to allow players to put themselves right in the action, in a sense.
However, we can assume that this rumoured gaming platform would provide games on a bigger and more serious level.
We’ll have to wait until April 4 to see just what happens but it’s exciting news nonetheless, particularly for people who have been wanting more out of Snapchat.
