A man from Belleville faces sexual assault charges after a 14-year-old girl came forward to Durham Regional Police with allegations against him.

The Durham Police Special Victims Unit launched an investigation in March when a girl, 14, came forward to allege a sexual assault early last year. The girl and the suspect allegedly met via social media.

The investigation later discovered a second victim, also a 14-year-old girl. She too provided a statement alleging her own assault.

Due to these statements, police arrested Ahmad Aljasem, 21 of Belleville on two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual interference. He will remain in custody until a bail hearing. No charges have been proven in court.

Police allege Aljasem posed as a 17-year-old boy under the pseudonym Michael on social media to approach the girls. They are investigating to ascertain if there are any more victims.

Anyone with information pertinent to this investigation can call D/Cst Firth of the Special Victims Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5316, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
