One of Mississauga’s three public beaches is posted as unsafe for swimming this week.
The beach in Richard’s Memorial Park, 804 Lakeshore Rd. W., is posted as unsafe on the Peel Public Health website as of Aug. 7.
The warning means levels of bacteria in the water are high enough to pose a risk to people’s health. Swimming in the water may cause illness, Peel Public Health says.
High levels of bacteria in beach water can make people sick with diarrhea, skin rashes, ear pain, cough or congestion, or eye pain. The beach water may have unsafe levels of bacteria due to heavy rainfall, large numbers of water birds, high winds or wave activity, or large numbers of swimmers.
Peel Public Health takes regular samples to check that the water is safe and there are no hazards that could cause injuries.
Peel Public Health monitors water quality at four public beaches throughout the summer. Signs are posted when the water is unsafe for swimming.
The other beaches in Mississauga at Jack Darling Memorial Park and Lakefront Promenade (A.E. Crookes Park) were safe as of Aug. 7. Professor’s Lake Beach in Brampton was also safe for swimming.
