Be prepared at home when storm hits, says Oakville Hydro

With a major winter storm just hours away, local residents are being reminded by Oakville Hydro to make sure they are prepared for when it hits.

Extreme weather can cause lengthy power outages.

Environment Canada expects the major winter storm to begin Thursday and last through Christmas weekend.

“Precipitation is expected to begin as rain or snow late Thursday afternoon or early Thursday evening before transitioning to rain for many areas Thursday night,” said Environment Canada. “Temperatures are expected to plummet on Friday morning leading to a potential flash freeze.

“Rapidly falling temperatures will be accompanied by damaging winds along with snow heavy at times. Extensive blowing snow will develop Friday morning. Very cold wind chills are expected to develop on Friday and persist into the weekend.”

Oakville Hydro suggests taking the time to create a 72-hour emergency kit that.

“Being prepared means being safe,” said Oakville Hydro.

Here’s what you need in your emergency kit to help you and your family stay safe:

BASIC SUPPLIES

  • Non-perishable food and manual can opener
  • Bottled water
  • Flashlights and batteries (or wind-up)
  • Candles and matches lighters
  • Warm blankets and/or sleeping bags
  • Enough fuel in your vehicle to drive to safety
  • Prescription medications

 

First Aid Kit

  • Sterile gauze pads in small and large squares
  • Adhesive tape and bandages in assorted sizes
  • Scissors, tweezers and safety pins
  • Instant ice packs
  • Disposable non-latex gloves
  • Antiseptic wipes or soap
  • Thermometer
  • First aid manual

 

Know Your Home
