Bank robbery in Burlington leads to two arrests

Two people now face several charges following an armed robbery in Burlington last week.

Halton Regional Police were called to the Royal Bank at 3030 Mainway in Burlington at approximately 3:30 p.m. on March 15 following reports that two men had robbed the branch.

According to reports, the suspects fled in a vehicle but were located by police nearby.

One suspect was immediately taken into custody, however, a second suspect remained in the vehicle and in possession of a firearm.

The incident caused some tense moments for those who were in the area who were told by police to take cover and remain indoors.

After a short standoff, the suspect negotiated his surrender to officers.

Police have now charged the following two men:

Michael Uzelac (37), of Welland, has been charged with the following:

• Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
• Armed robbery using a firearm
• Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000

Stephane Smith (54), of Niagara Falls, has been charged with the following:

• Armed robbery using a firearm
• Utter threat to cause death or bodily harm
• Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
• Pointing a firearm
• Firearm – use while committing an offence
• Unauthorized possession of a firearm
• Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle

Both accused have been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
