A baby squirrel found alone was rescued in Mississauga recently.

The Eastern squirrel was found with no mother or siblings or a nest in sight, the City of Mississauga said on Facebook on July 1.

“He was very hungry and thirsty and needed help,” the city said.

Animal Services officers stabled him and sent the kit to a rehabilitation centre. Once he is old enough, he will be released.

Although in this case the baby squirrel was abandoned, in most cases the mother will return.

“Squirrels are excellent mothers and will come back for their babies if you give them a chance.” Toronto Wildlife Centre writes. “If the babies are not injured, reuniting them with their mom is the best possible option. Squirrel moms will also take much better care of their babies than any human possibly could.”

The wildlife centre suggests waiting at least four hours, unless they are hurt, to see if the mother will come back but make sure to keep them warm.

Eastern gray squirrels and American red squirrels are the most common squirrels in the City of Mississauga, the city says.

Baby squirrels are generally born between March and April and July and August. They’re weaned when they’re about eight weeks old and disperse from the nest.

If you suspect a baby squirrel has been orphaned or observe minor injuries, you can contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

The City of Mississauga also suggests if people find a sick, injured or orphaned animal, they can call Animal Services at 905-896-5858 any time.
