Two baby birds got a second chance at life after they fell from a tree on a windy day.

The two common grackle babies fell out of tree on a windy day last week, according to the City of Mississauga.

A resident picked up the birds and cared for them for three days. The resident then called Mississauga Animal Services. Unfortunately, the baby birds could not be reunited with their parents as too much time had passed, the city said.

But Mississauga Animal Services found a reputable wildlife rehabilitation centre where the little birds will be cared for until they are grown.

“They will be released within 1 km from where they were found,” the city said.

Common grackles, a large blackbird, are commonly found in suburban areas, according to the Audubon Society. Both parents feed nestlings, bringing them mostly insects. The young typically leave the nest about 16-20 days after hatching.

In some situations, it is best to leave a baby bird where it was found as the parents may return for it, according to the Canadian Wildlife Federation. However, if no parent returns after two hours or if the bird is injured, then contact Mississauga Animal Services or a wildlife rehabilitation centre.

In the meantime, place the young bird in a shoebox with air holes and lined with a soft cloth for warmth. Keep the bird warm in a quiet area, and do not feed the young bird.

Mississauga Animal Services suggests calling immediately at 905-896-5858, if you see or find an injured or sick animal. Officers respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
