A popular Niagara Falls-based cafe and catering company will close its doors for good at the end of the month, leaving many diners disappointed.

On July 17, the owner of Queen Bean Cafe took to social media to announce that the restaurant–an upscale cafe meant to provide a little “respite” from the chaos of Clifton Hill–will be closing for good on July 31.

“It is with a heavy heart and mixed emotions that we make this announcement today,” the statement reads.

“Over the years, that vision came to life, and we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved together.”

The restaurant, which has won a number of awards, including an Emerging Business Award from the local Chamber of Commerce, was known for its sandwiches (including its Queen’s famous breakfast sandwich), bagels, avocado toast, wraps, bowls, salads and vegan dishes.

According to the company’s website, the cafe also offered catering services and served some of the most well-known wineries and businesses in the Niagara region.

In a statement, the owners said that COVID has taken a profound toll on the business, even after the pandemic’s emergency phase.

“The landscape changed, tourism has not fully recovered, and despite our best efforts, we have struggled to return to normal operations,” the statement reads.

“As much as we would love to continue serving this wonderful community, financially, it does not make sense to keep the café open under the current circumstances.”

Customers reacted with shock and disappointment on social media.

“This is so upsetting, on so many levels, I’m so sorry. I wish Niagara Falls Tourism would operate as other boards do – being in the industry I see so many gaps for improvement. Your area should be thriving,” one poster said.

“You’re so talented tho and I have no doubt you’ll bounce back even better. Xo”

Another agreed the cafe will be missed.

“So sorry, we had wonderful tea parties with your goodies. We will miss you,” another poster wrote.

In a statement, the owners thanked staff and customers for their loyalty.

“As we prepare to say goodbye, we cherish the memories we have created together and the relationships we have built within this incredible community.”

While customers won’t be able to enjoy a coffee or bagel at Queen Bean come Aug. 1, they can take a piece of the cafe with them. According to the owners, the cafe will host a garage sale to clear its stock on July 28 from 10 am to 6 pm.

Items available for sale include charcuterie boards, tea cups, teapots and more.
