Attempted bank frauds in Pickering, Whitby leads to charges as police seek other victims

DRPS believes Adebowale Onapajo may have tried to defraud banks in Pickering, Whitby and possibly more.

A man has been arrested in Durham Region Police’s investigation into two attempted bank fraud as investigators allege he tried to open accounts with fake ID. Police are trying to find any other victims.

Police believe the man went to the a bank Victoria St in Whitby on March 25 and tried to open an account with fake identification. Someone called police and the man was arrested on scene.

In the course of their investigation police came to believe the man had gone to a bank on Brock Rd in Pickering and tried the same fraud technique on March 22.

The Financial Crimes Unit thinks the man may have defrauded other banks that investigators may not be aware of and have released his photo in the hopes someone will recognize him.

Adebowale Onapajo, 43, is charged with two counts of attempted fraud under $5,000, two counts of unlawful possession of a counterfeit mark, two counts of possession of identification document of another, and two counts of  failure to comply with a release order.
