Asian supermarket closes over $2.36 million dispute in Ontario

An Asian supermarket in Pickering that opened under new management with some fanfare a year ago has closed, with a sign on the door saying the owners of the Brock Road grocery owes more than $2.36 million.

Memon Supermarket at 1899 Brock Road (the former Sobey’s location) has been locked out by the landlord, with Calloway REIT, through the bailiff, posting a notice June 1 declaring the lease to be terminated because of an outstanding debt of $2,367,805.51.

Memon, with Izhar Ahmed listed as owner when the store reopened on June 26, 2025, will now have to arrange with the landlord to remove “all goods and chattel.”

Any attempt to enter the premises without that permission is considered “unlawful,” the notice said.

Memon released an official statement last week saying they were aware of videos and online content containing “false and malicious allegations” about the company and said a police report has been filed.

“As the matter is currently under investigation, we will not be making further public comments at this time,” the company said. “We appreciate the patience, understanding and support of our community while the appropriate processes take their course.”
