Brampton artists are being asked for their ideas for a memorial honouring Brampton firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty.

The planned memorial took a step closer to fruition today when the local firefighters union contributed $150,000 to the project, matching the City of Brampton’s commitment.

“I am proud of our members who have voted to support this important initiative,” said Paul Lecompte, president Brampton Professional Fire Fighters IAFF Local 1068, which made the donation.

“This memorial will mean a lot to everyone and recognizing those who have sacrificed for the safety of our community is important so that our family and theirs keep their memories alive.”

The memorial will be located at the new Fire Headquarters and Training Centre on Williams Parkway, scheduled for completion in the spring of 2023.

The state-of-the-art, centralized facility will be home to Brampton’s Fire and Emergency Services Headquarters, Prevention Division, new Fire Station 203, an Emergency Operations Centre, Emergency Measures Office, and indoor and outdoor fire training facilities.

“We are so grateful for this incredibly generous contribution from our partners at IAFF Local 1068,” said Brampton mayor Patrick Brown.

“I am so pleased to invite artists to take part in creating this important piece for our Brampton Fire and Emergency Services. It is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to recognize a team that plays an invaluable role in our city.”

Brampton is now inviting professional artists and artist-led teams to submit expressions of interest to create a new Brampton Fire and Emergency Services Memorial. Artists must reside in and be legally permitted to work in Canada.

The first stage of the process is a review of those interested by a selection panel of project stakeholders.

The second stage will be for those artists shortlisted to submit a design proposal, from which the successful artist will be chosen.

The submission period for stage one will be open until Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. For more information or to download the Call to Artists document, visit the city website.
