Hamilton police’s arson unit is investigating a “suspicious” fire after firefighters discovered the front door was “forced open” at a building on the Mountain earlier this morning.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 24, crews responded to a reported structure fire on Crockett Street between East 33rd and East 34th streets, according to the Hamilton Fire Department.

On arrival they found a building with the front door already forced open and smoke emitting from the building,” it said in a statement to inthehammer.com. “We cannot confirm that it was an operational business.”

Crews then encountered two small fires, which they extinguished. They didn’t see anyone in the building.

“As this scene was suspicious, the Fire Marshal’s Office and Hamilton Police were notified,” the fire department said.

Hamilton police confirmed they started investigating the “suspicious” fire around 9 a.m.

“It is early in the investigation and we ask that anyone with information please contact police,” the Hamilton police said in a statement.
