Arson charges filed after two fires set in downtown Oshawa garbage cans damage buldings

A man has been charged after two fires in downtown Oshawa caused significant damage.

The first blaze was set around 7 p.m. on Feb. 24 in a garbage can near Athol St. and Albert St. The fire caused “significant damage” to a nearby building, according to Durham Regional Police.

Nearly a month later, around 11 p.m. on Mar. 13, another garbage bin was set alight a block away from the first on Athol St. and Celina St. This fire also spread to a nearby building and caused significant damage.

The police determined both fires were set by the same person and both were classified as arson.

Later Brandon Haynes, 28 of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with two count of arson, two counts of mischief, two counts of possession of incendiary material and breach of probation. He was held in custody until a bail hearing.
