‘Appreciation, celebration’ important parts of Black History Month in Mississauga: city

Education, appreciation and celebration are at the core of Mississauga’s efforts over the next four weeks in recognition of Black History Month.

The City of Mississauga will once again host dozens of events, exhibits, tours and other activities to mark the Black community’s many contributions — both locally and further afield.

“Black History Month provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements of Black communities in Mississauga and beyond, listen to their stories and learn more about their history and contributions to Canadian society,” city officials said in a news release on Monday.

Black History Month, which originated in the U.S., is celebrated every February across Canada and south of the border. Several other countries celebrate it in October.

In Mississauga, the city partners each year with the Black Caucus Alliance to recognize accomplishments and shine a spotlight on talented artists, authors, musicians and more who are amplifying local Black voices and stories, officials said earlier.

The alliance is a group of Black community members that advises Mississauga’s mayor on issues affecting Black communities.

City officials and alliance members encourage people to visit the Black History Month website, which “highlights a variety of learning opportunities and engagement activities designed to deepen the understanding of this important month.”

Among activities planned for the next four weeks are:

• library author talks, storytelling and book lists
• music playlists highlighting local Black artists and musicians
• museum tours
• community celebrations and events
• sports and shows

One of the key evenings planned this month is the third annual Celebrating Black Excellence event, taking place Feb. 28 from 7-9 p.m. at city hall.

“The event will include performances, keynote speakers and an awards ceremony” celebrating and recognizing the accomplishments of Mississauga’s Black community, city officials said.

Musical guests are part of the evening’s lineup.

Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish said the city aims to “create a more inclusive society and bring about positive change, one step at a time.”

She added that, with ongoing support from other organizations and the Black Caucus Alliance, “we are building a vibrant future.”

Alliance chair Shelly Scott-England said “the invaluable contributions of Mississauga’s Black community” need to be recognized.

Together with the City of Mississauga, “we are committed to advancing equity and confronting anti-Black racism. This month, we honour the achievements, culture and history of the Black community while raising awareness of ongoing injustices.”
