Hamilton police are investigating after an incident involving “hate-motivated” graffiti and mischief at an Islamic school.

Hamilton Police are investigating a hate-motivated mischief incident targeting a school bus owned by the Waterdown Islamic School.

The school is located near Highways 5 and 6 in Hamilton, but the incident happened some 18 kilometres away on Mohawk Road East, police say.

Once inside, suspects discharged a fire extinguisher throughout the vehicle, damaged seats, stole property and left anti-Muslim graffiti, investigators say.

The incident is being investigated by the Hamilton Police Hate Crime Unit, and police say hate-motivated mischief can have “a significant impact on victims and create fear within the broader community.”

“When a vehicle connected to a faith-based school is targeted, the effects are often felt beyond those directly involved,” police say. “Hamilton Police take reports of hate-motivated incidents seriously and remain committed to investigating these incidents thoroughly and holding those responsible accountable.”

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area, or anyone who may have information related to this incident, to come forward.
