Drivers heading toward Niagara this weekend should prepare for delays as another round of lane restrictions takes effect on the Burlington Skyway during one of the busiest travel periods of the summer.

The Niagara-bound lanes of the QEW Burlington Bay Skyway will be reduced from Friday night through Monday morning as crews continue a long-term rehabilitation project on the bridge connecting Burlington and Hamilton.

The latest restrictions begin Friday, July 17 at 10 p.m. and remain in place until Monday, July 20 at 5 a.m.

During the weekend work, one of the four Niagara-bound lanes on the Skyway will be closed, leaving two lanes of through traffic open along the QEW. One lane providing access to the Skyway will remain available through the Eastport Drive collector ramp.

Drivers should expect narrower lanes through the construction zone and are advised to plan extra time when travelling along the QEW toward Niagara.

The Eastport Drive collector ramp to the Skyway will also face overnight closures as crews relocate temporary barriers. The ramp will be closed:

  • Friday night into Saturday morning from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Sunday night into Monday morning from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

All ramps at the Northshore Boulevard interchange will remain open, and Eastport Drive will remain available as an alternate route for drivers needing to reconnect with the Niagara-bound QEW.

The ongoing work is part of a major rehabilitation project on the 2.2-kilometre Niagara-bound Burlington Bay Skyway bridge. The project, which began in May 2024, is designed to extend the service life of the bridge and includes illumination upgrades along the QEW.

The Ministry of Transportation says construction is expected to continue until December 2026.

With summer traffic volumes increasing, officials are also encouraging travellers heading toward Niagara to consider taking GO Transit to avoid possible congestion and delays caused by construction.

The Skyway project has been one of the most significant long-term highway rehabilitation projects in the region, with lane restrictions continuing throughout the construction period.
