A new weather alert has been issued in southern Ontario.
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain on Friday, according to the yellow-level weather watch from Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Just before 3 p.m., Environment Canada upgraded the watch to a warning for Toronto.
The storms could bring wind gusts up to 100 km/h, ping pong ball-sized hail and heavy rain with amounts possibly exceeding 30 millimetres.
The watch is in effect for much of southern Ontario, including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton, Niagara Region, Newmarket, Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa, Whitby and southern Huron County.
The storms may develop quickly and could pass through this afternoon and evening.
Local utility outages are possible. There is a risk of injury.
Strong wind gusts can damage trees, buildings and overturn vehicles. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain.
