The Town of Whitby has said goodbye to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) due to “growing concerns” about the platform’s accountability, direction and viability as a “trusted space” for public communication.

The town joins the Durham District School Board, which left X in late November following President Donald Trump’s election win.

A news release from Whitby said Elon Musk’s highly politicized platform is “increasingly being used to spread harmful misinformation and at times discriminatory beliefs. The nature of this content does not align with the town’s core values of collaboration, accountability, respect, and engagement.”

CEO Matt Gaskell said with growing risks to Canadian sovereignty and tensions due to actions being taken by the U.S. government, “it’s more important than ever that we create and uphold a culture of respect and inclusivity – both in our community and on the channels we use to engage with our residents.”

“Under Elon Musk’s control, the social media platform X is increasingly being used to spread harmful misinformation, permitting and perpetuating a culture of division and distrust. To ensure a safe and more respectful place for public discourse, we have made the decision to discontinue our use of this platform.”

The statement said the town remains committed to keeping residents informed through “clear, factual, and responsible communication.” Residents can continue to receive updates through Whitby’s online newsroom, Facebook and LinkedIn and on Instagram.

A final message has been posted on X to notify followers of the town’s decision to discontinue its use.

“Whitby is committed to respectful, inclusive, and fact-based dialogue,” said Mayor Elizabeth Roy. “Given this platform’s decline in reliability and safety, I support CAO Gaskell’s decision to discontinue its use by the Town of Whitby, and I will also be removing my Mayor Elizabeth Roy account. Many reputable organizations have already done the same, and I believe it’s the right step to ensure we continue engaging with our residents in a way that is positive and meaningful.”

The statement from the town said staff will continue to review its approach to social media tools and engagement.

“The town will continue to explore and test new ways to engage with residents and is committed to keeping them informed and connected.”
