Another large-scale event is planned at a Mississauga plaza after the city got a court-ordered injunction to stop dangerous gatherings.
Last week, the City of Mississauga announced that it got a court order to shut down, if necessary, two large-scale “unsanctioned events” at Ridgeway Plaza. The plaza is at the west end of the city, southwest of Eglinton Avenue West and Ridgeway Drive.
Soon after it opened in 2022, the plaza garnered a reputation for poor traffic control and late-night parties. It’s also known for its huge selection of restaurants. For residents who live nearby, the car racing, rallies and excessive noise have left them sleepless and looking to the city for answers.
The city’s temporary injunction, meant to enable stronger enforcement at the plaza, went into effect last week as a gathering was planned to mark Pakistan Independence Day on Aug. 13-14.
A second gathering, tonight, Aug. 19, is planned to mark Afghanistan Independence Day.
Both events were expected to attract more than 3,000 people to the plaza.
Peel Regional Police were to block off Platinum Drive and Odyssey Drive in advance of the gatherings. Signage was also to be installed to inform people visiting the plaza about the new rules and the orders.
In response to a inquiry on how enforcement went on Aug. 13 and 14, Peel police said there were gatherings, but there have been no arrests and individuals have obeyed police orders when directed to leave.
“Officers will continue to be on be on-site to address any issues and, if necessary, may close the plaza, restrict surrounding streets, and remove individuals who refuse to comply with lawful orders,” police said in an emailed statement to INsauga.com. “It’s important to note that non-compliance may result in arrest.”
Videos have emerged that appear to show enforcement on Pakistan Independence Day.
One video shows police cruisers blocking off streets, but another video shows large crowds inside the plaza.
“I wasn’t expecting this on August 13th but this was unexpectedly fun,” a post reads about a gathering at Ridgeway Plaza. “Also hats off to the security for keeping it controlled and much quieter than last year.”

Another video circulating online shows Peel police officers being booed as people crowded into the plaza. It is not immediately clear when this video was taken, but posts emerged on the weekend and this week.
“Peel police did not have an easy time shutting down the Pakistan Independence Day celebrations at Ridgeway Plaza,” one person wrote.
