The federal weather agency says that “locally dense fog” pushed into the region by lake breezes over Lake Ontario, will persist into Thursday morning.

A fog advisory from Environment and Climate Change Canada was issued shortly after 9 p.m. on Wednesday (March 16) for most of Durham Region, including Oshawa, Pickering and Uxbridge, as well as the Niagara Region centres of Grimsby, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines and Welland.

“Locally dense fog resulting in areas of near zero visibility can be expected tonight into Thursday morning,” the advisory states.

“Motorists are advised to exercise caution.

“Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.”

Temperatures across the Golden Horseshoe were above seasonal averages during the day on Wednesday. The temperatures dipped late in the afternoon and into the early evening, but are also expected to rise further on Thursday.
