Almost 1,000 new cases of COVID in Peel Region today as Brampton and Mississauga push numbers higher

Peel Region has again broken a daily record for new cases of COVID-19 as outbreaks in Mississauga and Brampton are pushing levels close to the 1,000 mark.

Cases in Brampton account for more than half of the new cases in Peel.

New data released by the Ontario government today shows 983 new cases in Peel which is contributing to a new record high across the province with 4,736 infections.

The increase has pushed the number of people treated in intensive care units (ICU) across the province to over 659, also a new high. Of those in ICU, 442 people require breathing assistance through a ventilator. In total, 1,932 patients are being treated in Ontario hospitals for the virus

Other area hotspots in Ontario include Toronto with 1,188 new cases, 526 in York Region, 216 in Durham Region, 150 in Hamilton and Halton Region has 140 new cases.

Several other jurisdictions across the province are showing triple-digit increases for the first time since the pandemic hit.

As well, 29 people have died as a result of COVID-19 in Ontario during the past 24-hours.
