A golf cart is probably not the best bet as far as getaway vehicles go.

A St. Catharines man has been charged after a cart was reported stolen from a St. Catharines business yesterday (May 4).

At 2:15 pm, the police got a call from a citizen saying they had spotted a golf cart driving south on a canal path in Welland.

Since the path has numerous openings to a nearby roadway in Port Colbrone, police converged on the area when one spotted a “light blue gas-powered golf cart” travelling on the shoulder of Elm St.

Catching up to the cart in the residential area of Apollo Dr., the officer said the driver refused to stop when directed to do so.  Police say the suspect pulled off the roadway at the Apollo Dr. and Meadowlark Dr. intersection and took off into a gravel and mud construction area.

Eventually, he stopped, running into a nearby field with the officer in hot pursuit. Police allege that officers found a set of brass knuckles, a butterfly knife, and a bag containing 19.2 grams of suspected crystal meth on the suspect during a search.

Houston James Boucher, 32, of St. Catharines, has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, two counts of prohibited weapon possession, one count of drug possession and two counts of failing to comply with a release order.

He was held in custody for a video bail hearing today (May 5) at the courthouse in St. Catharines.

Anyone who may have information about this incident is asked to contact the investigating officer by calling 950-688-4111, option 3, extension 1023200.
