The alleged mastermind behind the killing of Brampton rapper Sidhu Moose Wala in India last year has been added to Canada’s 25 most wanted list.

Born in Punjab in 1993, Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu was better known by his stage name Sidhu Moose Wala. He moved to Brampton in 2016 where he attended Sheridan College as an international student after studying electrical engineering in India.

A controversial figure in music and Indian politics, Wala was killed in May 2022 while travelling in a vehicle in the Mansa district in Punjab. Over 30 rounds were fired into Wala’s vehicle by occupants of two other vehicles, with police saying gang involvement played a part in the murder.

Interpol has issued a red notice for Satinderjeet Singh “Goldy Brar” Brar in relation to the killing, who has also been added to a list of Canada’s 25 most wanted fugitives at No. 15 by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The son of a former police officer in India, the 29-year-old Brar moved to Canada on a student visa in 2019, according to Indian media outlets.

Brar claimed responsibility for the killing of Wala in a Facebook, saying the attack was retaliation for the death of a political party leader in India. The Interpol red notice was issued against him last year, and Brar is wanted for several charges including murder, criminal conspiracy, and supply of illegal firearms.

He was also reportedly charged in relation to a 2012 incident involving a clash between two groups but was acquitted before moving to Canada, and is a ranking member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

Moose Wala sustained some 19 gunshot wounds in the shooting and was pronounced dead a short time later. The rapper was a controversial figure in India, in part due to his lyrical style. In 2020, police charged him under India’s Arms Act for allegedly promoting gun culture in one of his songs.

He also joined India’s Congress Party and unsuccessfully ran in the state’s assembly elections.

Wala was influenced by Tupac Shakur and became known for his music in 2017 with the hit song “So High,” and his debut album in 2018 made it to Canada’s Billboard Albums chart.

Last year, Brampton City Council approved a mural to honour Wala and the city is also considering naming a street after the rapper.
