This long weekend, residents in Mississauga and Brampton should be wary of a higher number of text scams related to Alectra.

Alectra says these scams increase around long weekends, and may include something like a text message requiring a fraudulent bill to be paid off with a prepaid credit card, gift card, PayPal, or Bitcoin.

Customers who get this scam are advised to check their most recent bill and contact Alectra directly.

“If it sounds suspicious, it is suspicious. Stay alert and trust your gut,” the electricity provider says.

Alectra asks customers to report suspicious messages, links, and numbers by calling 1-888-495-8501.

More information on scams and fraud is available at their website.
