Car insurance in Ajax cost about the same in 2021 as in 2020 — but has become the second-highest in Ontario, since rates declined in most major cities.

A survey released Tuesday (Jan. 25) by rates.ca shows that the estimated annual auto insurance premium in Ajax last year was $2,104. That was 1.7 per cent lower than in the previous year, and about $75 fewer than that of Vaughan, which took over the No. 1 spot with an average of $2,179. But it is also 35 per cent higher than the provincial average.

Three other Durham Region centres were in the top 10. Pickering ranked sixth at $1,959 (0.1-per-cent drop from ’20). Oshawa was eighth at $1,833 after a 12.1-per-cent increase, and Whitby was ranked ninth at $1,792 (a 0.9-per-cent increase over the previous year).

Rates.ca estimates premiums for each city based on the premium for a 35-year-old with a clean driving record who drives a 2018 Honda Civic, or a three-year-old car. Of course, several other factors are considered when a broker gives an individual an insurance quote.

Ontario also has the highest auto insurance premiums in Canada.

The overall decline in rates is believed to owe to an increase in remote work, and a corresponding drop in collisions and claims.

Toronto was seventh on the list, with an average premium of $1,953, down by more than 11 per cent year-over-year. That’s about $5 per month less than Ajax, roughly the same as Pickering, $10 a month more than Oshawa, and about $13.40 a month more than Whitby.

Rates also vary widely across parts of Toronto. Four of the 10 most expensive neighbourhoods to insure a car in Toronto are in Scarborough, with estimates ranging from $2,297 to $2,562.

The least expensive auto premiums in Ontario are east of Durham Region along Highway 401.

Belleville, Cobourg, Trenton and Picton are among the communities where the average estimated premium is just $1,175.

The lowest estimate in Ontario, though, is $1,132. That value was assigned to several southeastern Ontario communities such as Kingston, Brockville and Cornwall, as well as smaller centres such as Amherstview and Gananoque.
