Longtime Ajax MP Mark Holland was promoted today from the Liberal’s Party Whip to the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his new cabinet this morning.

Holland served as MP of Ajax-Pickering between 2004 and 2011, sitting on a variety of committees. He briefly left federal politics after his defeat in the 2011 election, but returned in 2015 taking the newly established Ajax riding.

In 2018 Holland was promoted to Chief Government Whip, tasked with ensuring party voting discipline. He succeeded Pablo Rodriguez, MP Honore-Mercier in the role, who he is again taking over for after Rodriguez was moved to the Canadian Heritage portfolio.

Holland’s new position is responsible for organizing the legislative agenda in the House of Commons. It is a particularly important role in a minority government such as this one, since it often involves negotiations with opposition parties for support and timetable selection.

Fellow Liberals representing Durham Region ridings, namely Ryan Turnbull from Whitby and Jennifer O’Connell from Pickering-Uxbridge, were not given cabinet portfolios.
