Contractor charged with renovation fraud in Mississauga and Brampton

An Ajax woman has been arrested on numerous fraud charges for allegedly collecting rental deposits, but blocking prospective tenants from moving in.

Investigators were tipped off about a woman named “Tracey Dewolfe” renting a room in a home on Telford St. The house is in a suburban area in the town’s north end, just off the corner of Westney Rd. and Rossland Rd.

According to Durham Regional Police, the woman would post ads for a rental room on Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji under the name Dewolfe. Prospective tenants would set up viewings of the room with “Dewolfe” and hand over a first-and-last-month rent deposit.

Police allege Dewolfe would never allow the potential tenant to move in.

After police were informed of the scam on Feb. 21, they launched an investigation and found this had happened to 16 victims.

Colleen Hull, 46 of Whitby, is believed to have operated as “Tracey Dewolfe.” She is charged with 16 counts of fraud and false pretenses and four counts of breaching a court order.

Anyone with information can call police at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2529 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
