Ajax gets out the vote with new website to improve engagement in municipal elections

The Town of Ajax has launched a new website to get out the vote designed to provide information to residents about the upcoming municipal and school board elections.
The site, Election Ajax, guides potential voters through the registration process, and teaches them how to vote online or over the phone. Residents can look themselves up to ensure their on the voter registry and that they’ll get their information letter in October through Voter Lookup.
During the voting period from 10 a.m. October 17 to 8 p.m. October 24, residents can vote online or over the phone. Voter information stations will also occupy the Audley Recreation Centre, the Ajax Community Centre and the McLean Community Centre.
There will be no paper ballots in this election.
The voting phone number and website information will be printed on the voters information card. Anyone who lives, owns, property or is married to a property owner in town can vote and as long as they’re a Canadian citizen over 18 years old.
If one can vote, they can run for office as well. Any town resident can submit a nomination staring May 2 until August 19. There is a nomination fee of $200 for mayor and $100 for council or school trustee. However these fees are returned to candidates after the election.

Shortly after the nomination period, residents can start to display election signs on September 29 until the election period ends. They can also support their favored candidates with donation up to $1,200 per a candidate and $5,000 across all council or school campaigns.
Neither corporations nor trade unions can donate to municipal election campaigns.
Launching the site to spread this information is part of Ajax’s commitment to “continue to be a trailblazer in the delivery of municipal elections, ensuring that the voting experience is modern, convenient and accessible for all,” in their strategic plan.
The new council and school trustee board will be decided on October 24.
