A driver was stopped in Ajax travelling twice the speed limit through a school zone on the town’s main thoroughfare.

Members of Durham police West Division announced the stop via social media shortly after 11 a.m March 14. The driver was clocked at 101 km/h in a school zone with a posted speed limit of 50 km/h on Harwood Avenue.

The driver had their license suspended for 30 days and their vehicle was impounded for two weeks. If convicted the driver faces up to $10,000 in fines and up to six month in jail.

Town councillor Rob Tyler-Morin, tagged in the DRPS post, pleaded with drivers to, “please slow down!,” when informed of the stop. Regional Councillor Marilyn Crawford commended the officers saying, “Well done, DRPS West Division.”

Speeders through Ajax have been on a bit of decline during the pandemic, attributed in part to reduced traffic volume. In an October update regarding Durham Vision Zero plan, council was told Durham’s new traffic cameras recorded 60 per cent of drivers sped through intersections with a camera.

That rate fell to 25 per cent when the project ended it’s enforcement period. Ajax recorded the highest speeder during the red light camera pilot, clocking a driver on Bayly Street going  196 km/h in a 60 zone.
