Ajax breaks ground on new banquet facility and event space

Ajax and Sun City Developments broke ground this week on what will be the newest and biggest convention centre in town.
The two-storey, 43,000 sq. ft banquet facility and event space on Beck Crescent will dwarf the nearby Ajax Convention Centre, which is about 30,000 sq. ft.
The developer also has planning approvals for an adjacent six-storey, 120-room hotel but is not ready to move forward on that project yet, a spokesman for the Town’s Planning department said.
The hotel was originally attached to a Marriot Fairfield property, which was scheduled to begin construction five years ago with opening set for 2020 but the economy and the subsequent pandemic put that plan on hold.
