Mississauga and Brampton should beware a new scam going around, especially if they use the popular vacation rental platform Airbnb.

A text scam has been targeting local residents, claiming Airbnb needs new tax information from them and prompting them to click on a provided link.

The text looks like this:

This sort of text message has been identified by Airbnb as a phishing scam.

“These messages are designed to trick you into providing confidential information, and may contain malicious software (malware) designed to access passwords and contacts,” the company says.

Residents are advised to block the number and avoid replying to the text or clicking the link.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, which keeps track of major scams and fraud throughout the country, advises residents to never share personal information with unverified people or groups.

That includes information such as your name, address, birth date, social insurance number, and credit card or banking information.
