Air Canada flight to Toronto makes an emergency landing in the U.S.

An Air Canada flight headed to Toronto was forced to make an emergency landing in the U.S. on Wednesday.

The Air Canada Rouge Flight 1702 left Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas at 11:23 a.m. destined for Toronto on Wednesday, according to online flight tracker FlightAware. But the flight landed at Des Moines International Airport in Iowa at 4 p.m., according to FlightAware.

The smell of smoke was detected in the cockpit and the cabin forcing the emergency landing out an abundance of caution, according to reports.

“Air Canada Rouge flight 1702 from Las Vegas to Toronto diverted as a precautionary measure to Des Moines on April 16 after an acrid odour was detected in the flight deck,” an Air Canada spokesperson told INsauga.com.

The aircraft landed normally and as per standard procedure, was met and inspected by airport first responders, and cleared to taxi to the gate, the spokesperson said.

There were 176 passengers on board but there were no injuries reported.

A replacement aircraft was dispatched and passengers arrived in Toronto early this morning, the spokesperson said.

Flight 1702 normally lands at Pearson Airport around 6:30 p.m. According to FlightAware, the replacement flight left De Moines at 11:50 p.m. and landed in Toronto at 2:23 a.m. on Thursday.
