Paul Johnson, General Manager of the Healthy & Safe Communities Department, will be leaving the City of Hamilton to take on the role of Deputy City Manager, Community and Social Services at the City of Toronto.

The City announced the move Wednesday (July 14).

Johnson has held his position since Jan 2018.

He is the reigning Hamilton Citizen of the Year for his efforts in 2020; leading the City’s Emergency Operations Centre. He split the award with Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, the City’s Medical Officer of Health.

“Mr. Johnson has helped the City increase affordable childcare options, reduce the affordable housing waitlist, and develop the Neighbourhood Action Strategy and the Urban Indigenous Strategy,” said the City in an official media release.

Johnson has held a number of roles at the City in addition to his General Manager role, including Director of Neighbourhood and Community Initiatives, Director of Corporate Initiatives, and Director of the LRT Project coordination office.

Johnson’s last official day with the City of Hamilton will be Sept. 3.

The City says senior staff are working on a transition plan and next steps.
