Burlington residents are being encouraged to install solar panels on their rooftops through a cash incentive program.

Those who apply for the building permit fee for residential solar panels this year will be offered a savings grant of $594.

The solar incentive program is a pilot project designed to remove a potential barrier to the installation of the panels.

The benefits of solar power include a transition to electrification away from the use of fossil fuels, resulting in a lower carbon footprint.

“Embracing solar panels is a crucial step in our action against climate change,” said Lynn Robichaud, Manager of Environmental Sustainability, City of Burlington. “By harnessing the power of the sun, we can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lessen our dependence on fossil fuels, and pave the way towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for generations to come.”

If you are interested in pursuing solar panels for your home or building, the City of Burlington suggests you do some research:

  • Speak to reputable contractors who have experience and have a good understanding of power connection requirements.
  • Consider how many years you have left in your roof before installing panels.
  • Contact Burlington Hydro to identify if there are any barriers to connecting solar panels to the local electrical grid through the net metering program in your neighbourhood.
