“A person’s garbage can be a criminal’s treasure,” Ontario Provincial Police are warning ahead of Christmas.

Officers have issued a media release advising the public to be careful this holiday season when it comes to their trash.

Police are encouraging residents to take steps to help them avoid becoming a target of criminals.

“Thieves can quickly ascertain what you received on your Christmas wish list by simply driving by and looking at the gift boxes put out to the curb for garbage pickup,” OPP said.

“Criminals can easily gauge which house would make a great target based on the advertisement left out for them each year.”

OPP provided a number of tips that individuals should follow. They include:

  • Taking boxes from “large ticket items” directly to a recycling facility if possible.
  • If boxes are placed at the curb, they should be broken down and cut into smaller sizes, as well as turned inside out.
  • All receipts and financial documents placed in the garbage should be shredded first.
  • Avoid posting about new gifts on social media.

Police also advised that if someone is away from home, they should make their home look lived in while they’re gone.

Mail delivery should be delayed or a trusted person should pick it up.

“Remember to always keep your vehicles and homes locked or you may lose what is inside,” OPP said.

“Thieves often look for the easiest target with the biggest, quickest return and by following these tips you can help prevent becoming a victim of property crime this holiday season.”
