police Brampton shoot gunfire

A lawyer was shot in his downtown Brampton office, which a suspected arsonist later targeted.

According to reports, criminal defence lawyer Manbir Singh Sodhi was confronted by the gunman in his office on Tuesday (July 23).

Around 6 p.m., shots rang out, and a man carrying a gun was seen running from the Sodhi Law Office on George Street near Queen Street.

Sources have confirmed that Sodhi was the shooting victim. He was taken to the hospital, where he is listed in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

Later, overnight, reports indicate a fire was set in the same office.

The extent of damage caused by the fire has not been determined.

Peel Police have confirmed the shooting but have not commented further on the incidents.

Several video clips posted online after both the shooting and the fire show that the area around the office was surrounded by police tape and a large contingent of officers who were investigating.

No suspect information has been released.

On his website, Sodhi says his office “provides legal representation and legal advice at every stage of the criminal law process.”

It goes on to say that Sodhi is a long-time professional and is “regarded as a top criminal defence lawyer, not just in Brampton, but throughout the GTA and Ontario.”
