It’s a time to celebrate the role that public works professionals have your community because National Public Works Week is May 19 to 25.

This includes staff who maintain and manage public facilities, public transit, roads and infrastructure and more.

Public works and building and maintaining infrastructure are vital to ensure the health, safety and comfort of residents and communities.

Even if inconvenient in the short term (such as road closures and temporarily stopping water and hydro), it is a worthwhile necessity in the long term.

While these service workers are normally given no thanks for their work, this week is the time to remember the invaluable services they give to the community and learn more about how they do it.

This Saturday on May 25, residents and families will have a chance to celebrate and learn more about public works through a number of fun and interactive activities at Mississauga Celebration Square.

Here is a list of some activities to enjoy:

·Guided tour of the Mississauga Transitway and Traffic Management Centre at 11 a.m. (departing from the west side of Celebration Square)

  • Truck and equipment displays
  • Live demonstrations (e.g., auto extrication)
  • Interactive exhibits with fun and educational activities
  • Photobooth
  • Bounce castle
  • Face painting
  • Charity barbecue in support of Engineers Without Borders

The event in central Mississauga is free admission to enter and exit from 10 am to 3 pm.
