A new grocery store is opening its doors in Mississauga, bringing supermarket shopping back to a plaza that once served as a longtime shopping destination.
Food Basics officially opens its newest location today, July 9, at Clarkson Village Shopping Centre, located at 1865 Lakeshore Road West. The more than 32,000-square-foot store is the company’s eighth location in Mississauga and its 156th store across Ontario.
The new store has created 110 jobs and marks the return of a full-service grocery retailer to the plaza, which was once home to a Dominion supermarket before it was eventually replaced by other retail uses.
Dominion operated in the Clarkson Village Shopping Centre before the brand transitioned to Metro. The grocery store later moved to the nearby Clarkson Crossings Plaza, where Metro — the parent company of Food Basics — continues to serve the community.
Food Basics’ arrival fills a longtime grocery gap at the Lakeshore Road West shopping centre, which includes several established businesses such as McDonald’s, Dollarama, Cobs Bakery and City Pizza.
“We are excited to be able to bring Food Basics to the Clarkson community, offering more ways for residents to save on quality products,” said John Manax, vice-president of operations for Food Basics.
“No matter where you live, people are always looking for ways to save. Residents who may be first-time shoppers at Food Basics will get to know us as a discount grocer that is a reliable source for fresh, always in-stock, healthy food at great prices.”
The new store features a selection of fresh produce, meat, locally sourced products, and Food Basics’ Irrésistible and Selection brands. Customers can also earn Moi Rewards points and order groceries online through Foodbasics.ca at the same prices offered in-store.
The store is also offering fresh BBQ chicken and other prepared food options as part of its product lineup.
Food Basics Store Manager Tara Gerow said she is looking forward to welcoming shoppers to the new location.
“Our main goal is to provide our customers with the best discount shopping experience possible with the most value at the lowest prices possible,” she said.
The company is marking the opening by giving gift bags to the first 250 customers, along with offering samples throughout the day.
The new store will also support the local community with a $5,000 donation to Food Banks Mississauga to help support families facing food insecurity.
Food Basics, which is the discount grocery banner of Metro Ontario Inc., says the Clarkson store is one of eight new locations it is opening in 2026.
The store will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
