A long-time Mississauga breakfast restaurant still popular with its local clientele is headed out of town once its lease expires.

The owners of the Daylight Grill in Clarkson say their lease isn’t being renewed because their landlord wants to bring in larger stores. The restaurant is moving to Burlington.

RioCan, the company that operates Clarkson Crossing plaza where the Daylight Grill still operates, has not yet responded to inquiries made by insauga.com.

Speculation on social media is that the plaza is trying to make room for stores such as HomeSense and/or Winners.

HomeSense currently has a store located in nearby Clarkson Village plaza and many believe that store will close down and move to Clarkson Crossing as it makes way for a future high-rise development.

However, a person with knowledge of the situation says there are no immediate plans to redevelop Clarkson Village and that HomeSense will stay put.

Still, social media outlets are rife with rumours indicating the HomeSense move is imminent.

“Hoarding has already started (at Clarkson Crossing) for when the renovations begin in February,” one Facebook user wrote adding that the buildings that currently house Daylight Grill, the old Turtle Jacks restaurant and other smaller businesses will be enlarged to accommodate the larger box stores.

Others agreed saying the changes that will take place are common knowledge in Clarkson and are being done in advance to accommodate the shoppers who will move into the large condo towers that are planned for the Southdown Rd. and Royal Windsor Dr. area.

While the new tenants have not been officially confirmed, operators of the Daylight Grill say that changes to Clarkson Crossing will clearly take place to make room for larger stores.

On Instagram, the owners of the breakfast spot said the last day of the restaurant will be Jan. 28. They have been at the location for almost 20 years.

“We are beyond grateful for all the love, messages and visits!! As you all know we would have never wanted to leave. You have become like family to us. Our landlord has chosen to make some changes which require our restaurant to be torn down this February,” they wrote adding that despite the move to Burlington they hope to return to Clarkson in the future.

The Daylight Grill is expected to open sometime in 2024 at Millcroft Shopping Centre at 2080 Appleby Line in Burlington.
