Property owners in the Region of Peel can expect a 2.8 per increase in taxes this year.

The Region of Peel operating and budget, proposed in early January, called for a 2.8 per cent hike.

And Peel Regional Council approved that hike on Feb. 2. For a typical residential property this will mean an annual increase of $144 for the regional portion of property tax bills.  Typical is defined as a home assessed at $578,600.

The increase for a typical commercial property is $255 for a small business valued at $641,900.

As a two tier municipality, residents will also see tax hikes in their city or town. Mississauga just approved a three per cent hike.

Additionally, the average home in the Region of Peel will see an increase to their utility bill of 16 cents per day (or $58 per year), while the average commercial/industrial property will see an increase of 42 cents per day (or $152 per year), the Region of Peel said in a press release.

The development of the 2023 Budget was guided by the strategic plan, with priority focused on the challenges Peel is facing as a growing community with increased service demands, the Region of Peel said.

Ongoing challenges include heightened inflation, supply chain issues, and changing legislation (specifically Bill 23, More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022 which will see changes to the way that municipalities can collect development charges to fund infrastructure).

The $5 billion 2023 budget includes costs to maintain current service levels for a growing population while addressing priority community needs.

Here are some of the ways the funds will be used:

  • Peel Regional Police will add 70 uniformed officers
  • Replace police infrastructure, vehicles and equipment, expand of facilities and advance technological innovation
  • Addition of 44 new paramedics to address the growth in call volume and four more 24/7 ambulances on the road
