Peel Public Health visited a Mississauga restaurant caught on video mishandling raw meat this week.

The video posted on TikTok shows a staff member working with meat at Lazeez Shawarma at Mavis and Eglinton in Mississauga. He tosses what appears to be raw chicken into cooked chicken.

Peel Public Health says a member of the public alerted them to the video on Nov. 29.

“Immediately following notification, a Public Health Inspector conducted an unannounced site visit and inspection, and met with the owner who was on site,” Peel Public Health said in an email to insauga.com.

During the visit, the Public Health Inspector did not see the food-handling practice shown in the video.

But the inspector highlighted the importance of the prevention of cross-contamination — ensuring that raw meat does not come into contact with cooked meat and that food contact surfaces must be sanitized after every use.

“The owner was instructed to ensure that all staff are using separate utensils to handle raw meat and cooked meat,” Public Health said.

Peel Public Health has visited this Lazeez Shawarma seven times since April 2021. They received a conditional pass this summer and an inspector responded to another complaint in early November.

But Lazeez Shawarma seems to have rectified the health issues now and Public Health says they do not plan a follow-up visit.

“In this particular situation, given that food handling, food storage and food surfaces were satisfactory at the time of the visit from Peel Public Health, the Public Health Inspector made the determination that a re-inspection was not required.”
