Music feeds the soul and every year musicians from across Durham Region do their part to feed bellies as well at the Concert to Feed the Need in Durham.

The fifth annual event will happen December 10 at 2 p.m. at Oshawa’s Biltmore Theatre as an eclectic lineup of artists – a who’s who of Juno and OMA-nominated musicians from jazz to country, bluegrass to blues, and pop to folk, with a touch of gospel thrown in – come together to help feed their neighbours in need – and the need has never been greater.

Co-presented every December by Rotary Clubs across Durham, the event raises funds to support Feed the Need in Durham, which collects and distributes food from its warehouses in Oshawa to more than 65 members – food banks, shelters and other food programs. And it comes as the demand for emergency food services is soaring, with food bank use in Durham higher than ever.

“We’re excited to once again be working with Rotary Clubs from across Durham to host this concert, raising both awareness and funds to support the work of Feed the Need in Durham,” says Ben Earle, Executive Director of Feed the Need. “Live music, like food, is a positive and powerful way to bring people together. So while the concert is about supporting our work this holiday season, it’s also about how a group of incredible performers from our community can inspire hope and joy when we need it most. We’re proud to be part of this great event.”

While the need has never been greater, so has the community response, as sponsorships from individuals, businesses and Rotary Clubs have more than doubled over last year, with more than a week still to go to the event. “That’s gratifying to see,” says Gail Nyberg, President of Feed the Need and a former Executive Director of Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank, as well as a current member of the Bowmanville Rotary Club. “It’s going to be a long winter and the funds will be put to good use.”

The lineup features well-known artists from across Durham and beyond with performances from Kalista Wilson, Cale Crowe, The Doozies, Tania Joy, New Moon Junction, Alicia Robicheau, Hunter and Kent Sheridan, and Dipo D Voice.

“Food insecurity is a huge issue,” says concert producer Joe Solway, also a Bowmanville Rotarian. “The fact that clubs all across Durham have gotten together to help feed our neighbours is a testament to the power of Rotary. And as always, I’m grateful to all the musicians who’ve stepped up to make this show happen. Musicians are among the most generous people anywhere.”
