The perception that Hamilton has a high crime rate is revealed in new data made available by a quality of life website.

In a ranking of Canadian cities, Hamilton came in ninth in the rankings of perceived crime-ridden places. Surrey, British Columbia tops the list with the worst reputation for crime.

The data was compiled through surveys taken by Numbeo, a crowd-sourced global website that looks at several years of community lifestyle issues such as crime, housing, healthcare and transportation.

The data shows that 61.39 per cent of people believe that crime in Hamilton is high. That number jumps to 76.60 per cent who believe that crime has increased in the city during the past three years.

Rates are current as of October of this year.

Further, it shows that 64.94 per cent fear walking alone along Hamilton streets during daylight hours. Significantly, the number drops to just 32.67 per cent who fear walking alone at night.

Other areas where Hamilton’s score is considered high concerns people using or dealing drugs with 72.70 per cent seeing this as a problem. As well, 65.02 per cent believe that property crimes such as vandalism and theft are an issue in the city.

It’s not all bad, however. When responding to the question, “are you worried about being subject to a physical attack because of your skin color, ethnic origin, gender or religion?” the score was 35.95 per cent, a mark considered low by the website.
