Halton police are investigating a possible ‘swatting’ incident in Burlington Sunday evening.

According to a police spokesperson, police responded to an apartment on Ghent Ave. in downtown Burlington at around 10 p.m. after receiving a 9-1-1 call stating eight people with guns had entered an apartment unit.

Investigation determined that no such incident occurred.

The caller was questioned by officers and stated he was chased through the hallway by a group of males (at least one of whom had a gun).

The investigation is ongoing at this time. No arrests have been made nor charges laid.

Halton police reiterate that swatting is a criminal offence involving a dangerous prank call to police. It uses numerous police and emergency resources as well as dispatchers and communicators who are all reserved for legitimate community needs.

Officers have also pointed out that the risk to residents targeted by these false calls is significant. In the US, there have been several instances where the unknowing victim of a swatting incident has been injured or killed.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Halton police at 905-825-4747.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or at the website.
