Durham’s Sludgehammers place second in international utility competition in Denmark

The Sludgehammers showed off their skills in Denmark this month while shining a light on the talents at the Region of Durham’s Works Department, winning a medal of each colour and finishing second overall at the International Water Associations’ World Congress and Exhibition.
The Durham team, comprised of Kirk Gonsalves, Matt Moffatt and Kevin Round, competed in an Operations Challenge that tested their skills in water utilities with a highly competitive round of challenges. The Sludgehammers placed first in the collection event, second in the safety event, and third in pump maintenance, which won them second place in the competition overall.
The whole team includes Prudence Cheung, Annette Ashton, Kirk Gonsalves, Kevin Round, John Presta, Matt Moffat, Adam Hubers and Andry Griffin.
This October, they will be also be competing at the 2022 WEFTEC Conference.
The International Water Association’s 2022 World Water Congress & Exhibition officially ended September 15. The event, held in Copenhagen, Denmark,
saw the participation of government ministers this year, adding a political dimension that covered three topics – finance, governance, and partnerships for water and the Sustainable Development Goals.

More than 100 countries participated, with 300-plus exhibitors, 160 technical sessions and 16 workshops and more than 500 posters and papers submitted for review.
The next world congress will be August 11-16, 2024 in Toronto.
